Prosecutors working for Special counsel Robert Mueller have told a federal judge they suspect Paul Manafort was serving as a "back channel" between Donald Trump's campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election. The reveal came during a hearing this week over whether Mueller overstepped his authority after charging Manafort with crimes related to Ukraine lobbying work and not collusion with Russia. Before joining Trump's campaign, Manafort had a share of financial entanglements with entities related to Russia. A filing last July revealed he was $17 million in debt to pro-Russian interests before taking on the role of Trump's campaign manager.
